Getting A US Passport Is Much Easier Than You Might Think

In the past, a quick weekend jaunt to Mexico, Canada or many Caribbean countries was possible with a birth certificate and other valid, recognized identification. With the new emphasis on security, however, carrying up-to-date travel documents is a fact of life. Getting a passport may seem complicated but is usually a relatively simple prospect.

The Application

You can pick up the latest application form at the post office or download one at home. If you choose to use the on-line method, be sure to use matte-finish 8 1/2 X 11 inch medium weight paper. If any kind of shiny paper is used, the entry will be rejected. Also, any damage such as rips or holes, even from staples, is not acceptable. The copy must be in black and white. There are applications for getting an urgent passport.

DS-11 Form

Officially called DS-11, it must be filed in person if you have never applied previously. This is also necessary if an old document has lapsed, been stolen or if your legal name has changed. Minors under age 16 have special requirements as do people applying from outside the United States. Filing by mail is allowed if none of these categories affect you.

The government website offers the choice of filling in the information on line, and then printing or printing first and completing the form by hand in black ink. Downloaded pages must be printed on one side only. Do not sign the document until you present it at an acceptance facility. That facility may be located at the post office, court clerk offices or even some public libraries.

Proof Of Citizenship

Valid proof of United States citizenship is an absolute requirement. An older passport that is still unaltered or damaged in any way will be accepted as identification but many people are required to present a certified birth certificate. Those lacking this certificate of birth or who only have a copy of one may obtain a valid document from their county, city or state of birth.

For other situations involving those people without a birth certificate, those born abroad or who have become naturalized citizens, check the government website for instructions. An applicant must also be able to prove identity through a valid state driver's license, a local or federal government ID, or a military identification. Additionally, you will need a new photograph showing you in standard clothing, wearing your normal accessories such as glasses.

Color Photo

That 2X2 inch color photo must meet certain standards, including having the right facial angles and size and be no more than six months old. Many opt to have it taken professionally but it is possible to do it yourself. The Department of State has an online photo tool with a link at the website and, in addition, many post offices will provide the same service.

Your social security number will also be required. Fees increase regularly so check ahead. After submission, the wait can be two weeks to two months but progress can also be checked at the website. A rush processing may be possible for an additional cost, if needed. For those who prepare well ahead of travel, getting a United States passport can be free from aggravation or complications. There are applications for getting an urgent passport.
